We purchased this US delivered car from an enthusiast in Toronto Ontario. She was just serviced so what an opportunity to show that an older Ferrari, specifically a 97 355 GTS 6 Speed can be a great roadtrip car.
Day 1. Thursday 13th of July we leave the house extremely early to fly from Ft Myers to Toronto via Newark NY. After cancellations, (Thank you United Airlines), delays and 2 hours sitting on the runway at Newark we finally arrive in Toronto at 9.30. We meet with Neal the seller, what a great guy to wait for us into the evening when our appointment was 3.30 in the afternoon. Looked over our ride home and she was exactly as described, Neal was kind enough to leave us a full tank of gas
Just 30 Minutes later we were in Mississauga to spend the night with family. After a few hours chatting and a very welcomed bite to eat, off to bed for a well earned good night's sleep. Early the morning of day 2, get to take a look at the 355 in the cold light of day, amazing condition for a 30,300 miles car, even I am pleasantly surprised. Had I been shown this car without knowing the mileage and asked to guess I would have said no more than 15,000 if that.
Day 2. After a leisurely breakfast with my Brother and Sister In law we set off for our 2 hour drive to a town just outside of London Ontario to visit with our very good friends Terry and Sheila. Terry is what you would call a certifiable car nut. The house looks big but 50% of it are garages for Terry's toys. Spent the afternoon playing with 4 wheelers and off road buggies, a beer or two later and it was time to set off for Niagara Falls and back home to the good ole US of A.
Just a 2 hour scenic drive along the 403 and we arrive in Niagara Falls, not sure if there was something going on or it was a usual Saturday night in the summer but there was no parking to be had anywhere along the Falls so we decided a last visit to Tim Hortons then across the border we would go. Having another 120 Miles drive at night on roads we hadn't driven for 22 years to our next hotel stop in Erie PA.
Day 3. Wake up early ready for the drive down to Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, luckily there is an SCCA weekend going on so will get to see some sports cars on track even if we can't be. Amazing roadcourse, 13 turns in 2.2 miles and 136' of elevation change, something we who use Florida tracks aren't used to. Best track food also.
After lunch and watching two of the feature races we headed off toward Kentucky via Cincinnati and on to Louisville, stopped along the way at Kentucky Speedway, unfortunately no races this weekend but did notice for a circle track the roads leading to it had some great right hand turns. Couldn't find the Ferrari parking lot.
Crossing the Ohio to Kentucky State line over the Ohio River
No Stallions other than this Italian in sight
Enjoyed a few hours out of the car in downtown Louisville in a very cool area called 4th Street, lots of bars, shops, restaurants and live entertainment, thought about changing reservations and staying overnight instead of continuing on to Bowling Green but decided getting an early start at the National Corvette Museum in the AM was a better idea.
Day 4. While visiting NCM we also went to check out the NCM track, not the best for spectators but supposed to be a great track to drive, unfortunately there was a Lucas Oils school going on so again no track time for us.
Enough of watching other people have fun or cars standing still, its time to head to Tennessee and the legendary Deals Gap, or maybe better known as The Dragons Tail.
Amazing scenery which ever side you look, just don't look down
10 Miles in to the 11 Miles and 318 curves enter North Carolina
Yes, she is a dirty dirty girl but like all the best dirty girls, so much fun
We reached the end of the tail, T Shirt and Hat time. What we found was that the main 11 Miles was very busy and the best was yet to come, continue South on 129 and the roads following the Tapoca Rd down towards Georgia and the scenery is just as spectacular and the bends almost as tight but no crowds.
The rest of Day 4 was spent driving through Georgia, eventually picking up i75 just North of Atlanta, nice city but the traffic is crazy no matter what time you pass through, maybe we are just small town guys. On to Valdosta for the night.
Day 5. Early morning and we are on the home stretch, hello Florida we love you. While driving south on 75 taking time considering what we need to do to bring her to the Black Horse Motors standard, nothing mechanical having just had her cambelt service. A little dye work on the driver seat, leather on the dash pod stretched or replaced, a couple of sticky interior pieces. Exterior just has a scrape on the lower bumper, same on one of the rocker covers and one wheel has small curb mark. Not bad for a 32k miles car, thank you again Neal for taking such good care of her.
1.25 pm and we finally return home. 2094 miles, 115 Gallons of gas, not a single glitch or hiccup, well with the car that is, thank you again United Airlines. So being home, back to the grind, getting the girl cleaned up and ready for sale, I can absolutely now tell prospective customers what I have always thought, you can drive a Ferrari on long journeys, leave with confidence and know that you will get to your destination in good time with a big smile on your face. Now just have to find a car to buy in Seattle and drive across the Rocky Mountains.
